Dear Chi Rong
This is a belated New Year Greetings for the Year of the Goat.
I have been receiving the exchanges shared by you and your class of 1969. Thank you for doing the key coordinating role and keep all of us informed of each other. And great to know everyone seems to be doing well and looking young after all these year. I have wanted to write, but have been postponing it again and again. I must do it this time.
Attached please find our Greeting Letter and three recent photos of ours, as attached files. This is for you and the Class of 1969.
Basically, life has treated us well in the past year, and we continue to lead a busy life. Effie's main achievement is the publication of her latest book, successfully launched in Singapore last month. The book, entitled "Beyond the Azure Sky", is a collection of her essays published in the past few years. It is as much a labor of love as of endurance as she persists in writing her weekly column without fail despite her busy traveling schedule for a few years now.
I carry on as Dean of School of Communication and Information at Nanyang. The School celebrated its 10th anniversary last July, which was originally planned to be an event to mark the end of my term as its founding Dean. Yet it was not to be so, as I had to extend my term for another year till June 2003. It looks like this will be definite this time. I have started planning for my sabbatical leave in the second half of the year, with much eagerness. Hopefully life won't be as hectic as it has been all these years. I deserve a break before I return to the leisurely life as a professor.
I should stop now before I make this yet another New Year letter of ours. As the world moves into another year of uncertainty, we send our best wishes to you and your family.
We are likely to do more leisure traveling in from June. If you are planning your next reunion, please keep me posted.
Best regards,
Guo Lau Shi and Shi Mu

The first one was taken place on March 17 in National Institute of Population and Social Security Research (Tokyo), the 2nd was on March 19 at Kwansei Gakuin University (Kobe) and the 3rd one was in Kyoto with my lovely Japanese girls. Hope our classmates enjoy these pictures. Happy Birthday to you. Tu

Here are two news stories regarding my new roles that may interest you.
"http://straitstimes.asia1.com.sg/singapore/story/0,4386,187415,00.html" and "http://www.zaobao.com/sp/sp013_080503.html"
[I use "Chinese Star" to read the second file, from Singapore Lianhe Zaobao.]
Just the other day, I wrote to Liang Jersey as follows below, to share with the Class. I am sure Ed Tu (Po Po?) will also be interested to know of such new developments at Nanyang University.

Dear Jersey and Ling,
I have been wanting to reply to your seasons' greetings. Then after I sent my notes to Chirong, with some photos, I know you would have received those also. Hence further delays.
The latest from my side is that I will finally step down as Dean of Communication and Information, after 11 years, from June 1. Then I have been assigned some new tasks, including the plan to set up a new School of Humanities and Social Science at Nanyang, by 2004. I attach the link from Straits Times below with a story on my new role, for your information. What I need to add to the story is that Sociology is definitely one of the priority programs I intend to set up, hopefully by July 2004. I am also likely to split my time between my current School and the new School, maybe with a double appointment as professor of sociology. So you see, after 11 years, I am back to sociology. I will soon begin the search for a new dean, and heads and staff of various programs, including Chinese, English, Sociology, Psychology, and Economics. If you know of good candidates, please pass the words on. The formal announcement for the recruitment is expected in July. [The story from local Lianhe Zaobao (United Morning Paper) today give the story about another new School of Design and Media I am involved.] Effie and I are taking a break in June to SF, Chicago, and NYC. Ann Arbor is somewhat out of the way. If your class is holding a reunion, do let me know. I still do quite a bit of travel. Can you forward this to Chirong, so that "busybody" (and to whom we are all grateful) can be kept informed? Regards, GLS

What a funny subject "My typist is going to Korea..." It took me a long time to understand what it meant. It's cool that from this subject we know that our classmate Showyin really has a good mother-daughter relationship, and that her daughter Cherry will help mommy do anything; even write a Chinese email for her friends. How nice! Showyin even if your typist is going to Korea you can still jot down something to all of us. Please do not scan anything to us because some of us can't open that kind of attachment. We appreciate any kind of message; please continue to keep us informed.
We're all able to keep in touch now because Chi-Rong has connected us through this "class 69website" Thank you for all your hard work Chi-Rong, now we know what's going on with our classmates! Also Mrs. Emily Chiong(寇紹敉) has a new Email address, I've included her new email.
Have a nice weekend!

Ha,ha! Both Guoshimu and guolaoshi read and enjoyed the piece. Keep up the good work, Tsao Tsao.
We are on vacation in Madison, Wis. now, visiting my daughter and her family. In fact, we spent one week in SF, having family reunion with my two children (Jason, or Xiaoqi as some of you knew him, and his family joined us from HK), and my brother's family of three generations with his new born grandson. Will be here for one week before going to NYC to visit Effie (Shimu)'s parents and sister.
Love to know your class is keeping so close with one another. It's been 35 years. Yet fond memories do not fade.

有個 洋妞更絕,看到他時大叫說:「Hey, I know you,I saw you on TV!」,然後也擠進去跟他握手,開心不已。

Dear

有個 洋妞更絕,看到他時大叫說:「Hey, I know you,I saw you on TV!」,然後也擠進去跟他握手,開心不已。

Dear

Dear Chi-rong,
Attached is one of my recent photos taken at Rockefeller University on Oct. 20 when I present a paper on Taiwan and Hong Kong mortality trends at the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP) seminar on human longevity. Sorry that I did not get chance to call you. But I did go back to Albany to travel to Harvard U. to visit my son with my wife. It was a very short stay, but I did enjoy it very much. Hope things are going well with you and your family.
